Yesterday Sirius Academy pupils participated in, and won, the

Solutions for the Planet BIG IDEAS final in the Palace of Westminster. The four girls, all of whom are in year eight at Sirius Academy were, according to Alan, “absolutely outstanding” in their presentation of their project, entitled V16.

The project, which will now be developed through working with Partners in Innovation, has the aim of encouraging young people to stay strong and avoid getting into situations where they could be at risk of underage sex and STIs which they highlighted on their campaign flyer, distributed at the event. Alan hopes that the project will later be rolled out across schools in Hull and the East Riding, and felt that it was particularly pertinent given that Hull’s teenage pregnancy rates, although declining, are still at twice the national average.

Following the event Alan stated that “the way they projected their big idea in front of hundreds of people was a credit to the school and the city.”  These girls deserve full recognition for their outstanding contribution to public health in the city and it will be exciting to see how the project develops.

Well done to all those who took part!
