I have been campaigning hard over the last year with the Labour Party in West Hull to stop the closure of Rokeby Care Home in Rokeby Avenue.

Rokeby has been assessed as an excellent care home – in fact it was given the highest possible rating by the regulator. Its residents say they are happy there and are completely opposed to being moved from their home.

Flood damage last summer prompted the Lib Dem Hull Council to decide it should be closed saying it was not worth repairing. This is despite its award-wining status, wonderful staff and happy residents. In any case, the campaign against the closure uncovered that the figures quoted to repair the damage were wildly exaggerated.

A strong and heartfelt campaign has prevented the closure so far. We have sought legal advice and took the original decision to close the home to judicial review in April this year. But on 22 September 2008, the Lib Dem Council restated its decision to close the home against the wishes of the residents and their relatives.

But all is not lost. Before the Council can move anyone, it needs to assess all the residents at Rokeby to see whether a move would prove detrimental to their health. I am determined to keep campaigning to prevent any harm or misery being caused to these vulnerable people.

If you agree that Rokeby Care Home should stay open and you oppose the moving of these vulnerable people against their will– please write to or email the Lib Dem Leader of Hull Council asking him to change his mind.
